Joie de Vivre lets fans design logo for new hotel

I like this contest format: it engages people during the hotel opening process, and helps build some buzz. You can see details on the Pacific Edge Hotel website:

JDV has a lot to gain with this promotion, and nearly nothing to lose. Bartering for a stay in their new villa is brilliant.

Would you let your fans design your new logo?

  • I am not so sure about this one Josiah.

While it’s nice to be interactive, I think designing a new logo is something I would leave to my own designer and not to my fans.

    Why ?

Simply because the logo doesn’t affect them directly.

Instead, I would rather give guests at my Goa Hotel a free hand to design holiday packages, letting them choose what they would like to see or do in Goa.

Today, holidays are becoming more and more bespoke and hotels should concentrate on offering custom made holiday experiences rather than such gimmicks.

    • Great perspective, Mihir. I love when people disagree with me!

This is a risky move. It works in some cases, but not in others.

I absolutely adore when hotels involve guests in designing special packages and promotions. I’ve seen Fairmont do this especially well through Twitter.

I think it always makes sense to ask people what they want to buy!

  • This reminds me of Zooppa: big brands let people have a contest to design logos or realize videos for their marketing campaigns. It’a great chance for designers and artists to show their own abilities, while the company can get for a few thousands of dollars a new fresh image.

  • Dear Josiah,

I’m 100% on that contest. Your article did not state whether they were going to take note of the suggestions or not. But I guess that was only part of the aim of it. The main goal was to create interest, involvement … therefore, to get a buzz started indeed.
I actually had a similar idea with the new name for a hotel being rebranded. I hope we’ll go ahead and I’ll let you know if you like.
Thanks for your ever so witty insights.
    Great day.

    • Yes, I pretty sure this contest will result in the actual hotel logo. They can attract some pretty good talent.

I’d love to hear how the hotel rebranding process goes for you. Let me know if you’d like to do an interview or case study about this.

      Thanks for reading the blog!

  • Love this idea… we have been running a similar model competition through facebook for our new web and brohure photography, it’s been tremendously successful, plus boosted our database. Definitely creates a buzz!

  • Hihihihihi ! And I thought you would be all angry :)

No seriously, I have quite an aversion to marketing gimmicks that hotels do just to get in the news. What a waste of Social Media!

Instead, they should concentrate on using this great resource to create and convey information and offers that the consumer wants and needs.

And what better way of research than asking the consumer himself through Social Media ?

David Ogilvy made some wonderful points about the power of research in his epic Confessions of an Advertising Man. Have you read it yet ?

    Cheers
    Mihir
