I like the principle behind Tripadvisor. I think it's a great idea. But the system has too many flaws in it's filtering process, and it's lack of any kind of appeals process leaves a lot to be desired. My hotel recently had a little upset with them as well, you can read about it here if you like.

I also recently had a chance to talk with a representative of Tripadvisor face-to-face and he admitted that he had no idea how the filtering algorithms worked, and he also refused to address my concerns regarding their appeals system. Not very helpflul or reassuring at all. Ultimately, I agree with B&B Normandy in that I neither like nor trust Tripadvisor. Hopefully, one day I can change that opinion.

I definitely hear you, since my last 5 (legitimate) reviews on various hotels & restaurants were all removed. Not sure why, and I found the process a little frustrating. :(

However, I do have some good experiences working with TripAdvisor through the hotels I work with. I think they have a great platform, and walking the line of accepting the right reviews is difficult. Hopefully they'll work out a solution soon.

Sounds like a super hotel working TripAdvisor to its advantage.

We, too have a top-rated accommodation, in our case the best Bed and Breakfast in Pays de la Loire, (aka Western France).

However, when we had false and malicious reviews posted on TripAdvisor we found the complaints system EXTREMELY unfriendly to us as owners, to the extent that I felt compelled to publish the story in our blog:

http://visitnormandy.wordpress.com/trip-advisor-fake-reviews/

Furthermore, Trip Advisor says it does NOT fact check reviews and will NOT accept any documentation to verify validity of reviews:

http://visitnormandy.wordpress.com/2009/11/14/trip-advisor-review-policy/

Personally, even with our good position on TA, I don't like or trust it.

TripAdvisor might inspire more trust if it would improve communication, engage in legitimate dialogue and care a little more about review validity.
