This Week in Hotels: July 4th, 2010 [Video]

In this week’s episode of This Week in Hotels, I talk with Guillaume about how to choose the right blog topics – and how to think about social media’s ROI for your hotel:

We fixed Guillaume’s audio from last week…now I just need to get the lighting right on my side!

We’re wondering about expanding this show’s format beyond 10 minutes to include longer discussions, and perhaps new types of material.

As always, we’d love to hear your feedback.

  • Great. My main take out is that social media in the industry should be considered as the new “guest comments” form and not a pure marketing platform. I don’t think Twitter content can easily be exported into a sleek little management report so all managers should spend good time going through the hotel account to see what is being said.

  • Hi Josiah, Guillaume
What a wonderfully informative video. Nice to get solutions for indpendent and group hotels. I found your comments on “thinking outside the box” in relation to content for Social Media and blogging eye opening and your recommendation to use social media in the various disciplines of hotel management – customer care, product/service development, competitor analysis etc to be a “light bulb” moment. As you so rightly say – just to focus on ROI all of the time is small minded.
Your offerings are practical, tangible and doable – it is nice to get such valuable content in such a usesr friendly way rather than the usual generic regurgitated spoofing one is subjected to. I look forward each day to receiving your updates which should form a part of the business plan for all hotels out there.

  • Brilliant discussion.

I agree if you focus on ROI then you miss the point of Social Media. Look at Dell and Comcast. This is just examples on how it really can be done.

Social Media is such a great tool, and there my be ab abundance of stories to share with your audience. Like Guillaume touch on here, you sometimes has to think outside the box.

We all know that a hotel in a very rural area has some challenges. Then you have to look into what the area has to offer. Was just out here this weekend in some rural area here in Mississippi. And now the blueberries is starting to get ready to be picked. So why not got out there pick some blueberries, take some pictures. Share the stories from your area with some images.

I and yes I am aware of the labor aspect, but if you have a clear vision of your Window Of Opportunity then you will find a way. If you don’t find creative ways to share what your area has to offer then you should not be surprised if your Hotel occupancy stays at status quo or decline.

I love that you guys brings up the option of thinking outside the traditional box. There are so many opportunities out there that Hotels could take advantage of.

I noticed you had a separate article about Tumblr vs WordPress, so I will read that.

    Cheers.. Are
