How did Wynn Las Vegas get 310,000+ Twitter followers in 6 months?

WynnThere has been some buzz on Twitter how Wynn Las Vegas (@WynnLasVegas) built a following of over 300,000 fans within six months. While they do a great job interacting with their fan base, the sheer number of people following them is remarkable — especially when most big hotels fail to pass 10,000 followers.

So how did they do it?

According to @HHotelConsult, Wynn Las Vegas appeared in the “suggested user” list that people see when signing up for Twitter.

This is a massive advantage. It’s better than publicity, because now the hotel has a way to communicate with all these people. As the New York Times explained in an article this summer, those on this list become Twitter “kings.”

So maybe the bigger question is…

How did they get on that list?

  • I frequently visit Wynn/Encore Las Vegas. The job Jade and the rest of the estrategy people at Wynn have done is just remarkable.

My last trip out there I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the estrategy development manager (@jadeEmily) and could not have walked away more impressed. Really hard working group of people that clearly know what they are doing. It is fun to see the interaction @wynnlasvegas has with it’s customers via Twitter and other social networking platforms. They have clearly positioned themselves as the leader not only in Vegas but the whole hotel industry as far as I am concerned.

  • Twitter is such a powerful tool and so viral that getting a few hundred thousand followers is possible for a large, world famous product/hotel.

Hats go off to the marketing team, they are certainly beating the global downtown and know how to get customers and keep them. Each subscriber is a customer or potential customer.

Great blog by the way! :)

  • Apparently it’s Twitter Staff that decides according to some features of your twitter account. They have explained in Twitter Blog (http://blog.twitter.com/2009/03/suggested-users.html) that they have introduced it to make new followers more active and make them understand what they could do on the site.

In the post they utter “We’ve explained that the Suggested Users list is a bit like your local book store’s staff picks but there’s a little more to it than that. Our Chief Scientist developed a program that scans active Twitter accounts for a bunch of key ingredients such as how much of the profile is filled out, certain indications that the account is interesting to others in some respects, and a few other signals.”
